Modern encoding technologies, advances in satellite and customer premises electronics, and the move to high frequency earth-space links allows the provision of high capacity satellite broadband services almost inseparable from their terrestrially delivered counterparts. Already in the United States second generation broadband satellites are servicing 1,000,000 subscribers with ADSL equivalent services. Third generation service are planned for North America, Europe and North Africa in the coming years.
